Fine dust had settled in a shallow crescent beside Wyatt’s chosen flat stone, as if something small had slipped there earlier. Gravel shifted when he bent, and the pull of gravity travelled through his arms as he levered the stone free. The darker underside was chalky and smelled dry, unlike the river-washed pebbles two paces away. A faint line of damp gravel marked the boundary where the last wave had reached, and beyond it half-submerged stones gleamed. Air from the water pressed against his chest; late sun warmed his back. Beyond the reeds a bell from the village drifted across the current. Wyatt turned the stone in his palm; the top face had been smoothed by years of rolling water, yet one corner still rasped against his thumb.

With the flat rock balanced on his forearm, he crouched in the wind-exposed spot facing the water and began arranging a simple column. The base stone was wide but uneven, so he slid a thinner shard under its high edge until the wobble disappeared. Patience filled the gap between his fingers lifting away and the stone accepting its own weight; only when the tower stayed steady through one full breath did he add another layer. The third stone came from the waterline—the river had rejuvenated the pebble, leaving its wet side heavier than it looked. Moisture, however, reduced friction; the face let the upper tier creep a finger width, then the whole stack tilted forward and scattered three discs across the gravel, startling his father who sat nearby, book open on a broad boulder.

He gathered the fallen pieces. Using the shard that once braced the base, he rubbed the wet pebble until the surface grew dull and less slippery; stability returned, yet without the wedge the foundation sagged to one side. One glance showed the column leaning past safe limits, and a gust nudged the top edge. He hesitated, then fetched a broader stone from the pile behind the warm boulder. Lifting it strained both arms, but its weight pinned the foot of the stack even though the tower lost a layer. As he pressed it down, a russet tuft slipped from the dust crescent—fox fur, not gravel, had drawn that first curved mark. The uneven but standing shape remained in place; Wyatt set the loosened pebble beside the tower and stepped away as the water kept tapping the gravel.
