A faint crack in the dust showed where Archie had nudged the cairn earlier in the afternoon. Sage leaves baked on the slope and released a peppery scent that prickled his nose while resin drifted from a weathered balcony jutting from an abandoned hut ten paces uphill; its splintered railing oozed pine pitch. On the flat boulder beside him, a glass jar served as a pocket-sized terrarium, its lid damp with condensation and the sharp smell of soil. Inside, a stunted sunflower pressed against the glass, each fuzzy leaf smelling like crushed cucumber. Wyatt, kneeling nearby, aimed his phone toward the valley. Farther along the bend, Felix—their adult companion—adjusted a camera strap. Archie studied the five-stone stack and planned to raise it two layers before Wyatt looked back.

First, Archie slid a flat grey stone from the gravel margin. Dust swirled up, leaving a chalk film on his tongue. He balanced the piece over the wobbling top; the stack stayed upright while the sage smell deepened. Still hunting stability, he lifted a second, thicker stone from the scrub hedge gap. Its underside smelled cool and mushroom-like, yet its weight pressed the layer below toward the downhill side. Hoping to anchor the column, he pried loose a third heavier shard from the slope-face outcrop, using a stick as a lever until metallic tang filled the air. The instant he set the slab on, a sudden gust tore along the path and the tower crumbled, stones rolling like seeds spilled from a daydream.

Pebbles still clattered when the wind eased. Archie gathered the runaway pieces, their surfaces now coated with dusty thyme fragrance. Remembering the lever, he rebuilt quickly: base stone, then the lighter flat one, then the thick centre piece, and finally the smallest cap. The column wobbled again. He crouched, lips tasting salt, and flicked the stick under the thick centre piece that had been pressed in earlier. With one clean tug, he pulled the middle weight free. The remaining layers shifted downward; grit gripped grit, and the sway stopped. He left the heavy stone beside the stack, its fresh fracture scenting the air like wet iron. Two paces away, a ground-sparrow hopped from shadow to sunlight, pecked a fallen sunflower seed, and fluttered off above the humming sage.

風停時，碎石仍在輕響。阿奇把四散的石塊撿回，表面沾了乾百里香的粉味。他記起木枝，再度重疊：底石、薄石、厚石、頂石。塔身又晃。他俯身，嘴唇嘗到汗鹹，把木枝塞進那塊之前壓得最緊的厚石下，一拉就抽掉了中間重量。剩下的層石往下沉，粗礫咬住粗礫，晃動停住。阿奇把那塊重石留在一旁，新裂口散出濕鐵味。兩步遠處，一隻地雀從陰影跳進陽光，啄走一顆落在地上的向日葵種子，然後越過低矮的鼠尾草拍翼飛離。
