As the kite climbed again, the bronze creature reappeared, riding the dancing string toward Clyde’s hand. When he pinched it, the shell felt cold and rigid; tiny eyes were painted glass, not living at all. The object was a bead shaped like a beetle, probably once clipped to a picnic blanket and now hitching on his line. He slid the bead down to the repaired splice, letting its weight keep the fresh loops orderly during the next gust. On a distant slope, a red kite shimmered against the sky, wheeling in the same rising current. Clyde pressed the beetle bead over the knot and sent his own kite surging upward after the red speck.
