English 원문
The hilltop grass felt slick beneath Clyde’s boot, although every stem looked sun-dried and brittle in afternoon light. A bronze-flecked beetle glided across the shining patch like a tiny sled, then slipped between blades beside his humming kite line. The wind pressed against his jacket, tugging the diamond kite higher, while the string sang a sharp amber note above the meadow. Clyde kept his stance in the string-run corridor, away from the crest where sudden gusts could shove him backward without warning. He had admired the kite’s simple structure, thin wooden dowels supporting bright fabric stitched during last month’s club meeting. If the wind shifted again, he would release more line, letting the kite explore the warmer air above the trees. Tiny green shoots pierced the soil near his shoes, proof that spring germination continued even on this wind-scrubbed ridge.
A rolling lull arrived without warning; the kite dipped, looped twice, and the slack line curled around a stubborn thistle. Clyde needed enough clear line to lift the kite again before the next gust struck the hilltop. First, he walked thirty steps downslope and lifted the line’s lower loop, untangling seven rough centimetres from the prickly stems. The extra length felt small, with the kite still nose-down in coarse grass beyond comfortable reach. He returned uphill, wound the freed section onto the reel, and began a second extraction further along the thistle’s ragged edge. Another twelve centimetres slid loose after gentle lifting and twisting, yet the knot at the weak splice held the kite down. He ran a rapid evaluation of tension, then decided to assemble both gains into one straight pull, betting on combined force. He braced his heels, drew back, and the knot snapped free with a soft twang that lifted the fabric clear of grass.
As the kite climbed again, the bronze creature reappeared, riding the dancing string toward Clyde’s hand. When he pinched it, the shell felt cold and rigid; tiny eyes were painted glass, not living at all. The object was a bead shaped like a beetle, probably once clipped to a picnic blanket and now hitching on his line. He slid the bead down to the repaired splice, letting its weight keep the fresh loops orderly during the next gust. On a distant slope, a red kite shimmered against the sky, wheeling in the same rising current. Clyde pressed the beetle bead over the knot and sent his own kite surging upward after the red speck.
