A neat rectangle of empty cloth interrupted the line of parcels on the food prep table. Oscar bent forward, fingers sliding across the gap, searching for the missing corn without lifting his eyes from the wood. The cob had been wrapped by Idris earlier, its ends twisted tight against spills. A rustle near his boot drew him lower; a green frog had dragged the foil packet and now wrestled beneath it. Oscar scooped the parcel, the sudden motion startling a speckled hen dozing beside the bench. Wings flapped hard, scattering the spare banana-leaf decorations, and several broad leaves sailed toward the warm kiln mound.

The leaves landed across the low vent, dimming the steady hiss that Idris had been tracking from the observation bench. Heat lifted against Oscar's shins as he reached the mound; the blocked gap sent steam sideways, leaving one flank cooler. Idris pointed toward the earth supply pile but stayed back, trusting him to test solutions. Oscar filled a metal bucket with damp soil; its weight tugged at his arms. He packed a first scoop around the vent, yet a thin white ribbon still squeezed out. A second bucket followed, pressed by his palms until the coarse grains compacted. Warmth brushed his knuckles, quiet validation that heat was spreading again. One narrow crack persisted, so he fetched a third, smaller load and tamped it with a slow heel-twist. The last grains slid in, and the vent fell silent at once while a gentle heat now rose evenly across the mound.

Back at the table, Oscar placed the rescued corn on a wide metal platter beside the onions waiting for their turn. The frog had vanished, yet the hen poked around the grass, already calmer, as if the brief uproar never mattered. Thin curls of steam now rose straight upward. The surface colour of the mound began a slow reconciliation with the afternoon air, turning from dark brown to dusty tan. Oscar hovered his palm two centimetres above the patched spot. He imagined the moment when the sweet potatoes inside would be ready to savor. A faint tick from expanding clay answered him, and he kept his hand suspended, measuring the steady warmth drifting upward.
