English 원문
Wet footprints had already dried by noon along the narrow ochre bank that divided two flooded paddies. Greer traced the marks back to a spot where the bank surface showed a fresh, shiny crack. The bank had been softened by last night's brief rain, leaving the clay loose beneath the cracked surface. Water escaped there, slipping through the clay and lowering the level around several drooping seedlings. Hope, who tended the far sluice for their relatives, lifted one hand in silent recognition and kept working. Greer needed the surface line on each green stem to match the thin scar left by yesterday's depth. Using his hand trowel, he carved a loaf-sized scoop of warm mud from the bank top. The first plug shrank the leak, yet a bright ribbon still flickered between the packed edges. If the gap widened further, the slender seedlings would topple into the shallow water below.
A soft twinge stirred his ankle as the narrow bank flexed beneath him, yet he reached for more mud. The second scoop slid into the crack and pressed water back a finger-width toward the seedlings. He waited, watching amber light ripple across the flooded plots, then noticed one stubborn drip hanging like melted honey. For a final charge, he scooped a third mound, heavier and darker, feeling grains crumble under the trowel’s rim. He drove this mass straight into the seam; the packed clay swelled, and the silver thread of water vanished. At that instant a wooden impala, tied to the mallet hanging on the nearby post, swung loose and tapped his knee. Startled, he slipped one foot off the edge; mud swallowed his toes, but the repaired bank held firm.
A moment later the seedlings nearest the patch stood straighter, their lowest leaves now clear of the water by exactly a thumb-width. Greer counted three steady breaths, confirming no fresh seep appeared along the cracked ochre surface. He scraped loose clay from his palms, then stepped back toward the tool rest where the mallet still oscillated. With deliberate care, he hooked the trowel’s muddy handle onto the post, and a dragonfly skimmed past the silent water.
