Wood Against Water-

English 원문
A cracked trowel and a loop of coarse string tapped the tool post as a canary fluttered past. Holly steadied her toes on the dry crust of the bank, its brittle surface crumbling under light pressure. She wanted the plank lifted a finger-width so fresh water could glide into her plot. The wood, swollen after days of soaking, absorbed her first tug and dropped back with dull finality. A faint shiver ran through her shoulders, yet the gate stayed closed. She tried again, fingers wedged below the plank, but its stubborn inertia kept everything frozen. Across the water, Vernon glanced up and remarked, “Your corner looks thirsty,” before returning to his seedlings.
While she rested, ripples lapped against the bank. A narrow crack near her heel seeped a dark thread of water toward the next paddy. The unexpected leak placed the low level beside the higher one in clear juxtaposition. Each second of escape would leave her seedlings gasping above the mud. Her first thought was to pack fresh clay into the gap, yet that meant a walk to the tool post. She eyed the swollen plank that had blocked her and noticed its face matched the length of the crack. With extra assertiveness, she rocked it sideways instead of upward, tearing it free along its grain. Mud splashed her calves as the wood slammed onto the leak, its weight sealing the thin channel at once. Water pressed against the exposed groove where the plank had sat, sliding into her paddy in a smooth, rising sheet.
A moment later, the inflow raced faster than planned. She looped the coarse string around a slim bamboo stake and wedged it into the groove to curb the gush. The plank’s weight plus the stake’s brace formed a neat stop-loss, and both banks held firm. A quieter stream purred through the gap, lifting the surface by slow, even millimetres. From the post, the trowel now hung still, its earlier tapping replaced by the water’s muted pulse below. A soft pulse rolled along the channel every few seconds, sliding onward toward the far paddy.
