The felt mat brushed softly against Holly's wrists as she nudged a sky-blue piece toward her corner. Overhead, the pendant lamp poured a bright circle onto the centre scatter, while the table edges lay in dimmer window light where Blake’s hands moved. Between those zones, flickering hand-shadows formed a pulsating band that slipped back and forth across loose cardboard. The box lid, propped against the sill, pictured a serene landscape: a mighty river curving past wildflowers and distant hills. Tiny painted buds hinted at new beginnings along its banks. Holly had already built a winding strip of sky; several edge pieces had been arranged by Blake, and their borders crept inward like slow tides. Her fingers made a frenetic search through the pile, yet one promising piece rocked under gentle pressure and refused to lock.
A sharp whistle burst from the kitchen; steam gushed from the forgotten kettle. Holly pushed back her chair, its legs creaking, and hurried down the luminous hallway. Water hissed into mugs, the whistle faded, and the hallway clock kept ticking. When she returned beneath the lamp, glare bounced off three fresh pieces now seated on the narrowing border. During her brief absence, afternoon light had shifted, and Blake’s section gleamed while her own sky looked slightly duller. One new piece sat a fraction higher than its neighbours; under her fingertip it rocked, thicker than true cardboard. Time and Blake together had locked a stranger into the picture.
Holly waited while Blake compared two edge shapes, his outline cutting a darker stripe through the concentrated light. The instant his hand lifted, she eased the impostor free, then paused until the shadows stilled. Instead of chasing another sky piece first, she slid a small meadow cluster she had built earlier into the vacant space; the correct piece fitted flat without a sound. Blake glanced up, gave a brief nod, and returned to his side. Their separate sections touched at a clean angle now, colours shifting gently between the lamp-lit centre and the dimmer edge. Only the slow ticking from the hallway clock carried through the softer light.
