When he removed his palm, the slab stayed put, yet a silvery thread seeped around the far edge of the dam, cutting an unexpected side channel. He scooped more clay, its sticky fibers dragging across his knuckles, and packed the leak. If the patch stayed firm, the upper pool would rise half a pint before sunset. Light cooled as tree shadows slid across the riffle downstream; Ned stepped back, and the thin ripples kept sliding through the new side channel and flickering around the boulder.
