English 원문
Six flat river stones already bridged the left half of the narrow gap, yet clear water rushed through the right. Beside the children, two crammed bags of sandwiches lay on pale grass where their aunt Elsa sketched wildflowers. Yvette hoped to transform the trickle into a calm pond before snack time, so she lifted a cool slate-grey slab. She slid the stone forward; the current struck its face, split, and traced a bright curve across her wrists. That sudden jet scoured a patch of clay she had pressed earlier, loosening fibers and sending grey threads spiralling away. The weakened edge surrendered; one supporting pebble rolled aside, bumping a driftwood branch that spun slowly on its dark axis. Water slipped under the rotating stick, lifted it, and widened the gap she had just tried to narrow.
Yvette leaned back and examined the crumbling clay, then pointed toward the driftwood pile jutting from the bank like tangled ribs. Leaving the gap to murmur on, she crossed the grass, crouched, and rummaged through bleached sticks for something sturdy. A thin, straight branch emerged, but she noticed its pale bark had already softened where water once touched it. She chose it anyway, trusting the thicker middle to resist bending under the shallow push of the creek. On her return, the water had tilted another pebble and sent chilly ripples flaring across the sunlit shallows. Light sliding over the shallow bed revealed a broad spectrum of blue, grey, and frost-white pebbles beneath her boots. She wedged the branch across the opening, pressing its ends into opposing stone pockets to give the dam a new backbone.
After minutes, the submerged branch began to bow; softened fibers let its ends slip, and the stream punched the slab again. A hairline stripe crossed the stone, then opened like paper tearing, proof of a hidden grain. Water burst through the crack, nudging a cold palm-sized pebble hard against Archie's ankle. He laughed, but Yvette slid downstream to a spot where the current fanned wide, showing exactly which seam leaked. She pried a thinner shard of shale from the outcrop, its edge razor-straight, and angled it into the crack like a doorstop. The split closed; flow dropped to a whisper, while a leftover swirl traced silver rings around the branch. Yvette held the wedge steady, knees planted in cool sand, while a restless ribbon of water slid along her sleeve.
