Seven ridged shell sketches lined the left page of Opal’s notebook, and the facing page still showed only faint guide strokes. When she looked up, a row of seven limpets curved across the rim of the nearest upper shelf pool with exactly the same spacing as her drawings. She shifted her weight onto a square of quilted fabric that protected her knees from the rough salt crystals, feeling the rock’s uneven pressure through the padding. Vance, her older brother, crouched farther back with his camera, a witty cartoon gull dancing across his sleeve each time he steadied the lens. Opal leaned closer; sunlight flashed from the water and slapped brightness against her eyes. She bent lower, trying to cast her own shadow over the pattern, but the slick surface forced her palms to slide and her balance wobbled like a slow hula.
A new wave slapped the lower ledge, and cooler spray prickled her bare arms. The glare returned the moment she straightened, so she dropped one elbow toward the pool, lowering her head just a breath farther than before. That subtle change blocked the direct beam; ripples calmed, and the “limpets” stirred. Tiny periwinkle snails, not limpets at all, began to crawl apart, their spiral shells tilting like curled fern tips in motion. The neat curve dissolved, revealing that the earlier stillness had been a pause, not a permanent home. Beneath them, brown seaweed swayed again, tracing another gentle hula under the water. A faded hibiscus pattern on her beach bag swam into view beside the pool’s edge, its pink shapes bending in the wet rock’s reflection. The tide line had already climbed a finger’s width higher, and sand clouded the deeper basin below, but Opal watched until the last snail broke formation. She slid back to the dry observation rock and laid her pencil across the damp spine of the notebook.
