Lines of neatly shaded shells filled the left half of Jude's weather-spotted notebook this morning. The right half still waited, a smudged graphite pencil balanced lightly across the central fold. Sea hush rolled in steady pulses, then thinned into soft fizz around the crevice zone where he knelt. Vernon crouched beside him, the thin pages of an identification card rustling against the coarse rock. The snail sat in shallow water, and each lift made it close up with a wet click before he noted the twist. A torn swallowtail wing, blown from the cliff meadow above, drifted down and tapped the stone with a dry whisper. Jude urgently needed that delicate spiral recorded before the climbing tide erased the chance entirely.
Overhead, a broad-winged gull released a mussel; the shell burst against the upper shelf and shards skittered downhill. Both boys hopped aside, their boots scraping out rough chords on the slate-like surface beneath them. By the time Jude brushed the largest shard aside, a deeper roar rolled through the channels below the shelf. Water swarmed higher with a gurgling sweep that overtopped the pool’s rim and muddied its once-clear surface completely. The periwinkle was gone, and only clouded water rattled softly as bubbles burst in uneven beats. Jude confessed, at least to himself, that his first plan had slipped away with the silent snail entirely. A turnstone hammered a small stone nearby, then snapped up the released morsel of crab meat with a piping note.
They waited while the stirred water quieted, a hush broken only by distant drip lines and the oystercatcher’s low whistle. Sunlight now angled differently, so Vernon leaned over, blocking the glare and forming a shadowy canopy above the crevice. Shielded from brightness, the snail edged forward again, its foot tapping the stone and its mouth taking a slow nibble of algae. Jude traced the spiral quickly, graphite scratching in thin rhythm while splash echoes pulsed along the lowering shelf behind him. A sudden gust flipped the swallowtail wing onto the fresh sketch, leaving a yellow smudge that streaked the final line. Instead of erasing the mark, Jude outlined it, turning the stain into shaded rock texture on the drawing. He nodded toward Vernon, handed over the nearly finished page, and placed the warm pencil beside the quiet pool.
