The wooden handle, slightly swollen from water, rasped against the paper each time the bristles spread pigment downward. A faint glug rose from the cup; the swirl echoed inside like distant paddles on a lake. The liquid stripe ran, gravity pulling it toward the still-wet lower edge where sunlight hissed as moisture evaporated. His sleeve brushed the jar, and the soft clink startled a cricket crouching beneath the table’s shadow. The insect sprang, its legs creaking, landing on a sturdy clay pot. A loose petal shook free and tapped the fresh wash near the advancing drying boundary.

Luke flicked the petal aside, then pressed the brush flat, gliding wider bristles to blur the pale circle. The jar chimed again when he lifted a handcrafted bamboo brush for finer edges. The sharper click startled the cricket once more. The insect darted along the rail, and a sparrow dropped from the gutter the instant it spotted that flicker. Wind from the bird’s quick dive rippled across the table and rolled Luke’s rinsing rag onto the wet zone. Moist threads in the cloth released a second spreading bloom, matching the first mark.

Luke steadied his breathing, tilted the board steeper, and let gravity carry colour over both uneven rings. Beside him, his grandparent’s arm brushed the jar with a muted clack while lifting a handcrafted woven basket of fresh stems. The raised basket blocked the sparrow’s next swoop, and the bird veered upward, wings pattering beyond the roof tiles. At the same hour, three bees circled the window box, their tiny wingbeats threading a constant buzz beside the quiet paint strokes. Down on the lawn, cut grass kept humming beneath the insects, a thin chorus drifting toward the porch steps.
