The top stone of the cairn trembled, but the packed earth underneath Wade’s boots stayed firm. Warm sunlight hardened the grey slab, yet its hidden face felt cool and slightly damp when he lifted it. A nearby adult, camera strap sliding across rough granite, focused on the valley while Wade studied the swaying column. He aimed to add one more layer, to pronounce the column complete before the uneven wind returned. He had borrowed a slim trowel from his pack; a likely candidate had been found earlier among shaded stones, its face almost smooth. Brushing sand away with steady, grooming strokes, he carried out the first attempt and laid a rust-red stone on top. A harsh burst arrived early; the fresh stone skated downhill and drummed against his boot.
He chased the runaway piece five paces downhill, rough grit scraping his palms when he caught it. Returning uphill, he saw the column leaning toward the slope, a reminder that air pressure kept shifting. If another gust arrived too soon, the whole stack would slide apart again. Wade chose to perform the same placement, yet this time during the long quiet that followed every strong burst. He stood still, fingertips on coarse granite, counting until the bushes around him finally stopped rustling. At the first complete hush, he eased the rust-red piece onto the stack and kept his hands bracing both flanks. Fine dust quivered beneath his thumbs, but the layers stayed upright, trembling softly rather than sliding. He backed away, breathing through dry lips, waiting to see whether the wobble would fade or grow.
By evening, cooler air crept along the hillside and long shadows crossed the packed path at the bend. The cairn held its new height, yet faint gravel rings marked where the rust-red stone had once slid. No boots pressed nearby, and a single dry leaf lay against the lowest layer, perfectly still.
