"Who erased the specials board?" Reese pointed at the slate beside the entrance, where only smeared blue chalk remained. The dangling sign began to oscillate whenever the door opened, scattering cool outdoor air across Reese's sleeves and the nearby sample shelf. The refrigerator’s blue-tinted glass reflected strips of fluorescent light, and condensation beaded like silver dots across it. A line had already formed along the floor markings, and her grey-eyed father studied a price list near the cooler. Reese wanted the new pastry she had glimpsed earlier, a blueberry–cream mix spiralling like paint, yet the smeared slate gave no details. While keeping her place, she leaned toward the stainless counter edge, hoping the reflective strip would mirror the board’s faint writing. The metal reflections wavered, a wistful grey blur rather than words, and the queue shuffled forward before she learned anything useful.
At the glass display counter, Reese faced a new difficulty as the surface turned cloudy again and hid every label. She pressed closer, but the names behind the mist seemed to oscillate between letters and smudges, refusing to solidify into clear words. Remembering the napkin dispenser near the takeaway window, she stepped sideways, pulled a sheet, and returned before the customer closed the gap. Using the napkin as a cloth, she quickly wiped a round patch on the glass. She then pointed at the pastry with the blue swirl now clear, just as the clerk looked up. The clerk boxed two pieces, yet the cardboard fought its crease, so he slid a wooden ruler along the fold. A glass jar of sprinkles rattled on the shelf while he worked, and the sparrow outside hopped along the bench nearby. Reese collected the box, thanked the clerk, and walked toward her father, unaware glaze slid between two corners. Behind them, that droplet grew heavier, then dropped onto the steel-grey floor where it spread into a small, shimmering oval.
