A cool draught slid through the doorway, and brief quietude followed while the oven timer’s shrill beep cut the air. Troy wondered whether the exquisite blueberry swirls had already vanished or merely hid behind steam. He rubbed the pane with his sleeve, but moisture returned at once. Hoping for a clearer clue, he stepped toward the sample plate, lifted a clean toothpick, and speared a cube of almond cake. The flavour matched his memory, yet the question about the swirls remained.

While replacing the toothpick, his elbow nudged the narrow shelf. The cup of unused picks tipped, rattling against the steel divider; dozens rolled like tiny pencils. One slid across the reflective counter, tapped a stack of paper trays, and the upper tray slipped forward, striking a ribbon spool at the packaging station. The spool began to spin, releasing a pale strip that curled toward the floor. Henrik, boxing orders nearby, caught the wobbling trays with one quick grip, and the cascade stopped; a single ribbon loop swung in place. Troy crouched to gather the scattered toothpicks. The entrance door opened again, outside air sweeping away enough steam that the glass lost its misty aura. Through the clearer pane, the blueberry swirls finally appeared, lined in silver tins on the bottom tier. If he had stayed near the doorway, the labels would still be unreadable. He straightened, set the rescued toothpicks back into their cup, and the cup rocked in a slow circle on the shelf.
