Warm barley dust pricked Janet’s nose the moment she pushed the grain-shed door wider again, and the smell hovered in the slanted beam of light like dry spice. She had measured the goat ration earlier, so the bucket in her hand already felt heavy and cool against her palm. Finn stood beside the hooks, his knuckles tapping lightly on another bucket; camaraderie showed in their quiet shoulder bump before they turned onto the path. Gravel gave way to sticky earth, each step pulling at their boots, and the farm dog zig-zagged ahead, shaking droplets from last night’s puddle. Ahead, the goat pen’s gate leaned inward where eager heads poked between rails, and hooves had sculpted shallow bowls in the damp ground that glimmered faintly.

Janet slid the rusty bolt, but the metal jammed halfway; the weight of a pressing goat trapped the wood tight. She braced a forearm against the rough post, squeezed, and pushed again, yet only a gritty scrape answered her effort. The delay set the other pens buzzing, a rising chorus that felt ready to turn the tide of morning calm. Ignoring the noise, she set the feed bucket down, then traced the bolt groove with a thumb; cold water from Finn’s nearby bucket ran across the bar, thinning the mud that clogged the slot. While the stream worked, Finn began to draw water for the trough, each pump stroke ringing in steady rhythm. A swirl formed where the trickle met the pen floor, curving into a careless piece of art before sinking into the soil.

When the largest goat lifted its head to sniff the air, weight eased from the gate; Janet timed her push with that brief slack, and the bolt slid the last centimetres without a sound. Grain and hay landed in the manger, and the animals clustered, their thick coats brushing her sleeves. She swung the gate shut, repeating the same patient rhythm, and the latch held. At the same moment, near the rabbit hutches, the dog’s wagging tail knocked an empty scoop off the stool, and the tinny clatter rolled along the path in widening ripples.

珍妮特推動生鏽的插銷，金屬卡在半途；一隻用力頂門的山羊把木門壓得更緊。她前臂抵住粗糙的立柱，再次用力，只有沙沙磨擦聲回應。這耽擱讓其他圈欄的動物也吵了起來，彷彿要打破清晨原有的節奏。她放下飼料桶，用拇指沿插銷槽摸索；芬恩提來的冷水順勢流過金屬，沖淡卡在縫裡的泥。水流與柵欄地面交會處漩起一道彎彎曲曲的紋路，看起來像隨手畫的圖案，隨即滲入土中。

最大那隻山羊抬頭嗅空氣時，門上的重量稍減；珍妮特抓緊那一瞬再推，插銷悄悄滑到最後一公分。穀粒與乾草落進飼槽，山羊們擠作一團，厚重的毛擦過她的袖口。她照著同樣耐心的節奏把門帶回原處，插銷穩穩扣上。就在同時，兔籠旁邊，狗搖著尾巴撞落一只空勺，金屬的響聲沿著小徑層層擴散開去。
