English 원문
Tess eased a small mirror against two thick books, and the plastic edge scraped the side table. Outside the opened window, the distant cityscape hummed with engines and brakes that rose and fell like slow waves. Grant sat nearby, reading, his pages rustling each time a breeze slipped through the curtain slit. The first beam struck the mirror, bounced upward, and splashed a shaky rectangle across a shelf rather than the target card. Tess had hoped the white card would glow, yet the misfire only lit a dusty atlas spine. She slid a matchbox wedge beneath the mirror, but the box gave a hollow clack and slumped. A quick thud from the falling mirror echoed through the room, ending the first attempt in dull silence.
Tess left the beam dancing on the shelf and padded toward the desk by the door. A glazed teapot, still warm from lunchtime brew, rattled faintly when she lifted its lid to check the water level. She poured the remaining trickle into a chipped mug; the liquid rang against ceramic before settling. Beside the mug, an old seed tray leaned on a stool, and a lone sprout pressed green tips through crumbly soil. She tapped the plastic tray; tiny grains struck the rim with a soft hiss. On a sideboard, jars of paintbrushes were stored from the days when the room served as Grant’s quiet atelier. Tess plucked one jar, and the bristles bristled outward, their shape recalling a gentle porcupine shaking rain from its quills. Meanwhile, drifting clouds muffled the window beam, and the room filled with a hush broken only by distant traffic horns.
A gust pushed the curtain wider, and sunlight burst back into the room, skimming across the side table again. The mirror that had slipped earlier lay partly upright after the jolt, throwing a dim spot onto the boards near Tess’s knees. Without thinking, she crouched lower, angled her shoulder inward, and turned the mirror’s base a finger-width toward the wall. The reflected patch climbed steadily, kissed the white card, and stayed there, pale yet unmistakable. If the cloud drifted back, the beam would wander, but for now the maze held its quiet line. Tess backed away, and the wheeze of passing buses continued over the constant hum under the fragile rectangle of light.
