English 원문
A pale strip of moss-free wood on the tool rack carried a sour damp scent where the rake once leaned. Cal lifted two fingertips to the strip, sniffed the starch odor, and scanned the grass for a trail of the missing handle. A mouldy breeze drifted from the upstream pool, mixing leaf-rot breath with the metallic tang rising off the low dam. Beside the channel, Ned crouched with a measuring stick, tasting spray on his lips as he read markings for the garden flow. Nearby, a fraying twine loop clutched the spare boards in plain obligation, throwing a dusty hemp odor into the humid air. Water below the sluice carried something unfamiliar, almost medicinal, spinning in a tight swirl halfway between the fork and the wheel.
The paddles turned in close fellowship and released a bark-sweet smell each time wet wood slapped air. Even so, the rhythm lagged and the indicator stick drooped under a faded red notch. Cal set both palms on the left sluice board and shoved it downward two finger-widths. The stick lifted only halfway to the notch while an arid scent from sun-warmed board lingered above the slower branch. He scooped three wet handfuls of leaves; crushed veins sprayed sharp vinegar mist across the water. The wheel quickened a little, yet the stick stalled a single nail-width short once again. Close to the swirl floated a round yellow leaf, flat like a medallion, spinning without escaping the pocket.
Cal traced the swirl upstream and glimpsed the dark rake head wedged between rough channel stones. Its wooden tines waved like kelp and stained the current with a faint mushroom odor. If the obstruction stayed much longer, heavier flow would drown the low downstream garden beds. He eased a board under the handle and levered it free; pond gas burst with a sulphur nip. A ribbon of terra dust clung to the board, scraping the channel floor and spreading clay aroma. The wheel quickened, yet dry axle wood scraped out a chalk-like smell across the grass. He knelt by the tin, teased the stiff lid loose with a coin edge, and found only a thumb-sized lump of grease. Cal carefully smeared every bit along the bearings as the indicator stick finally kissed the small red notch. Cal tapped the empty tin against the rack, leaving it upside down beside the twine-bound boards.
