Sliding the Sluice Board Beside the Wooden Water Wheel-

Bright reflections chased across the paddles, but the irrigation channel beside the garden lay under a dim roof of drifting leaves. Quinn stood at the sluice gate, rubber boots planted in the shallow glare, aiming to split the stream so the wheel would spin fast enough while water still reached the soil he wanted to cultivate. A russet leaf drifted in vanguard of a small cluster, bumping the wooden board and slipping into a narrow labyrinth of eddies below. He gripped the notch and pushed; wet wood squeaked yet refused to slide more than a finger-width. The board had been swollen by hours of soaking water, and pressure from the brighter, faster branch of the fork pinned it in place. “Three centimeters so far,” Wanda called from the outlet, her measuring stick casting a long silhouette over the darkened stones. Quinn leaned harder, shoulders tight, but the paddles clapped only lazily, and the wobble stick rocked with almost no glow of movement.
Mist flickered above the weir, and a brief surge sheeted over the lip; Quinn waited until that surge passed, then drove the board downward during the quieter lull—trust in the process of timing rather than force. The timber groaned, slid another span, and water shifted with a new glare toward the wheel. Time will tell whether the garden receives enough, he thought, watching spray catch thin sunlight like quick sparks. Yet the wheel still lagged. A hidden knot of leaves gathered against the upstream rim of a paddle, robbing each stroke of speed. Using the long-handled rake from the tool area, he reached across the pooled darkness and lifted the mat free; droplets arced, landed on the stone, and vanished into a patch of pooled shade. The wheel answered with a steadier clap, though not a perfect one, and the stick quivered higher. Near the axle, one wet leaf stayed behind, pressed flat against the wood where its faint outline darkened the grain.
