English 원문
A hollow clank rang from the cracked plastic bucket as Emmet set it on the damp sand beside the moat channel. He and Ian aimed to flood the newly cut trench before the tide arrived, believing a ring of water would guard their sandcastle. Earlier they had sketched the plan in a spiral-bound journal, the page darkened by a blunt pencil that now lay on a towel near their shoes. Emmet’s slow, steady scoops showed a mindful approach: knees bent, shoulders low, palms packing the cold mixture the way a potter presses clay. Yet the bucket’s jagged rim caught against the moat lip, tearing neat edges into rough ridges. When they lifted it, seawater dribbled through the rim’s crack and vanished, leaving only a shallow puddle that sank into the grainy floor.
The boys hauled more water, but the leak kept repeating. Emmet had pressed his thumb over the split, and Ian had wrapped a strip of seaweed around it, yet nothing held. If the crack had been smaller, the loss would have gone unnoticed. While they argued, the sun warmed the bucket; soon the once-narrow split had been widened by the gentle heat, and a thin stream escaped like thread from a needle. The trickle slid along the moat wall, loosening packed sand. A higher wave hissed forward, reached the softened section, and the seaward edge slumped inward with a muffled sigh. Grit slipped under Emmet’s feet, and the neat trench twisted into a crooked bend.
Emmet paused, watching the leak draw a shiny line toward the sea. An idea landed as lightly as a stray dandelion seed on his wrist. Instead of fighting the flaw, he planted the bucket at an angle so the warm water flowed through the crack in a steady ribbon. The leak carved a narrow channel that joined moat and ocean; the next wave poured through the path, filling the trench without striking the towers. The heavier incoming surge spread, then lost speed inside the watery ring, and the castle walls held their form. A few meters away, their journal pages fluttered in the breeze where Ivan, sketching a boat, ignored the commotion. At the same moment, a small dinghy tied inside the distant harbor rocked gently, its hull tapping against the rubber fender while a gull glided above the rippling surface toward open water.
