English 원문
A shallow moat ran halfway around a low sand mound; the unfinished side lay smooth and quiet. Cruz stepped onto the rubber mat, the slight bounce sending a soft thud beneath his shoes, and the sandbox greeted him with the dry scrape of his shovel against the timber edge. He had spent many afternoons on this spot, yet the green plastic sieve now rested on the opposite corner, and a fresh scratch cut across the frame where a tiny warp bent the wood inward. The sieve’s wire rang when his wrist bumped it, a crisp note that stopped Sylvie, who was raking nearby. Chains clanked above as another child swung high, then the noise ebbed. The entrance tunnel had been shaped by earlier play, but its roof sagged. "Listen," Sylvie whispered, tapping the sand; a dull, deeper tone answered from under the surface. They both paused at the odd resonance.
Cruz dug where the sound thickened. The first bucket came up heavy with damp, tenacious grains that clung and dripped in slow pats. He pressed the mass against the sagging tunnel; it held for a beat, then crumbled with a muffled shuffle. A second scoop followed, wetter still, and Sylvie packed it with meticulous care, yet the weight remained too little, leaving gaps that hissed as dry sand slid away. A distant fountain hissed louder each time a child pressed its stiff button, marking their rhythm. Determined, Cruz struck deeper. The shovel rang on wood; moisture pooled, proving the hidden pipe below. A third, broader bucket rose, anchored by the sticky mixture. Together they pressed, and the wall firmed. The mound shifted, then settled; the moment of balance arrived like a low click from the timber frame. Their small stick bridge stretched across the full moat at last, unbent.
Cruz and Sylvie walked toward the fountain for a drink. Behind them, the sandbox kept a gentle hush, broken only by the lingering clink of a sieve rocking in the breeze.
