English 원문
Gritty stone chilled Lark’s fingertips as she braced herself on the fountain ledge. She had planned to capture the arching water in a quick pencil design before her grandparent finished photographing roses nearby. It took a spot of valor to sit so close, because a damp overture kept leaping from the basin whenever the wind shifted. Droplets sprayed her sketchbook; her shoulder jerked and she swept the page dry with her sleeve. That sweep sent a thin ribbon of water sliding along a groove, then dripping onto the gravel path. The loose gravel let a pebble roll downhill, where it tapped a plastic bowl set out for a thirsty terrier, tilting a sip of water across the dusty ground toward a shadowed niche beneath a bench that seemed to harbor yesterday’s leaves.
The terrier followed the moving shine, tugging until its leash nudged Lark’s metal bottle off the ledge. The bottle hit the wet gravel, spun, and poured a narrow stream that merged with the earlier trickle. Both little currents slid toward her sketch bag on the lowest bench slat. Lark lunged; rough wood grazed her wrist as she lifted the bag higher. She shoved the bottle aside with her foot, wedging it against the bench leg to halt the flow. Just then the fountain’s surge weakened; the spray had been reduced by a timer diverting pressure to hidden sprinklers, so the broad fan shrank into a thin column. The calm showed her first seat now lay safely dry, a simple after-effect, not a prize. Across the path, the terrier’s tail kept casting damp arcs onto the gravel.
