Ella and her friend Eve traded places at the shade-sun boundary, so the colours could be checked under both lights. A gull drifted above the lake’s old wooden wharf beyond the grass, while pigeons pecked near the bead container that rattled each time Eve nudged it. Since the bracelet’s inception the pair had followed a neat chevron plan, yet the new row now curved right. Extra tension on the left thread had bent the pattern, and the next glass beads refused to sit flat.
