A vinegar-sharp scent drifted from soaked birch bark downstream, weaving with the resinous sweetness that still recalled dawn. Raine stood on the far bank, raising an eyebrow toward the marker post half hidden by lichen; its triangle symbol blurred so badly that even the bright orange paint carried only a fraction of hope for clear reading. Their map sat rolled in Gwen’s pocket, and meager resources remained: one cereal bar, two swallows of water, and a compass whose housing trapped a wandering bubble that nudged the needle sideways whenever the boards sloped. Checking the bearing was a responsibility, yet intuition alone read nothing in the tilted plate, so she crouched for a closer look.

Gwen unscrewed her water bottle, meaning to rinse the grey growth away. The first pour ran over the plate, carrying mossy flakes into the clear flow below. That tiny current struck an upturned leaf, spun it against a support beam, and the backed-up trickle seeped through a crack in the plank flooring. On the plank’s underside, beads gathered until one dropped like cold tea onto Raine’s waiting shoe, startling him into shifting weight. His sudden step shook the boardwalk; the compass, lying on the rail, slid and landed face-down in a shallow puddle forming between the planks.

She righted the bottle at once, wedging a cracked pine cone beneath it so no more water could thread through the floorboards. A sour, iron smell rose as she lifted the muddy compass; the bubble drifted back to centre, giving a steady reading at last. The cleaned plate, though still blotched, revealed enough of the triangle to point them toward the dim pine corridor on the left, and they started that way with quiet shoes on the needle carpet.

A water strider downstream skimmed across the widened ripple, zig-zagging past the loosened lichen specks before the current swept it beneath the fern arch.

她立刻把水瓶扶正，用一顆裂開的松果墊住瓶底，阻止更多水線穿過地板。抬起沾泥的指南針時，一股帶鐵質的酸味竄起；氣泡回到中央，讀數終於穩定。雖然路標仍斑駁，但露出的三角形已足以指向左側昏暗的松林走道，兩人踏上鋪滿松針的軟地繼續前行。
