English 원문
A stripe of pale light swept along the steel handrail when the stairwell lamp blinked awake. Heavy boxes from a recent storage shuffle crouched against the landing wall. Their cardboard edges threw blue-grey angles across the floor tiles. Grant stepped through the self-closing door, sneakers brushing carpet lint before sliding onto the cooler landing tiles. A screensaver showing elephants on safari drifted across the monitor inside the adjacent office and added moving reflections to the metal rail. He paused to read a taped diagram that outlined where various cables belonged. Only seconds later, the cautious sensor misread his stillness, and the stairwell lamp slipped into darkness. Cool air hugged the concrete walls, and the static of distant photocopiers filtered faintly down the shaft.
He waved an arm in a wide circle until the bulb flared again. A corridor chat earlier had called the storage shuffle a win-win situation, yet the cramped landing told another story. Grant had promised the meeting room team an adapter cable, the thin kind that joins old laptops to the projector. According to colleagues, the drawer beside this landing held one, but the boxes pressed against it left only a handwide gap. He tried sliding the nearest crate aside; its rough base scraped against carpet and resisted every tug. Sweat dotted his forehead although the air stayed cool, and the light timed out once more, burying everything under steel-grey shadow. In the sudden dark, a slim green spark blinked among the cords; without glare, it was finally visible. Grant stilled his breathing, letting the sensor remain fooled so the glow could guide his fingers through the tangle. He hooked the cord loop that sagged like a quiet hammock between two plugs and pulled it free.
A second crate still blocked the drawer, yet the freed adapter easily threaded over its corner and dangled toward the corridor. Using that new length, he lifted the cable, then stepped sideways past the box without moving the heavy load at all. The obstacle’s own darkness had become the tool, an outcome no elaborate plan or lofty strategic vision could have predicted. Grant gripped the cool handrail that had glimmered under full light earlier and carried the adapter upward through the muted stairwell.
