The plastic ridge of the HDMI adapter rubbed smooth and warm against Pia’s thumb as she unplugged it from the tabletop power strip. Overhead, the meeting-room panels shone in flat, even rows, washing glare across the pull-down screen where Paul, the visiting oceanographer, hoped to show his slides on marine conservation. Pia joined the adapter to his laptop and lifted the cable; its thirty-centimeter reach dangled uselessly before the bright beam. She traced the shadow edge across the oval table and noted a gap of nearly two hand-spans.
A second adapter lay beneath the projector cart, forgotten after the morning briefing. She clipped it on, and the line gained another short length, yet the plug still hovered in harsh light, far from the socket. Paul had walked almost a kilometer from the station and now crouched beside her, holding the laptop like a cautious beachcomber lifting a delicate shell. A poster on the wall, printed by the outreach team, showed a starlit reef; its glowless silhouettes hinted at what the audience would soon see. Pia remembered an identical adapter in the corridor printer zone, but a print job still ran, the sheet stack flashing white each time the scanner bar passed. She waited through three slow passes of that reflected gleam; when the final page slid clear, she detached the adapter, added it to the growing chain, and the combined length clicked home. At once the overhead glare surrendered: the projector lens dimmed the room’s center while shadows pooled beneath chairs, and the first slide bloomed across the screen.
Faded office chatter drifted through the corridor just as two colleagues opened the door and peered at the darkened space—the room booking board had double-counted the hour. Pia and Paul looked up; their finished cable lay like a narrow bridge from table to cart, undeniable proof of priority. The newcomers backed away, their silhouettes folding into the corridor brightness. A low fan hum from the projector lingered in the dim room.
