English 원문
A brushed steel ticket clip slid off a finished shoe and rattled into the shadowed gap behind the wooden cubby. Dean, arriving with his parent, caught a quick glimpse of its polished edge flashing like a coin before it vanished. The brass footrest plate under his sneakers felt icy, yet a warm draft from the buffing wheel drifted across his ankles. On the far bench, the wheel hummed high and then began to wind down, leaving a faint shiver in the leather-scented air. Rows of finished pairs waited in neat slots, but one empty space showed where the clip should have stayed. The clip had been placed on shoe number twenty-six earlier that morning, yet the slot now showed only flattened felt. Dean balanced on tiptoe, stretching a finger toward the gap, though the distance still swallowed his reach by several centimeters.
While the cobbler stitched a heel, Dean planned to rescue the clip before it disappeared among stray cork bits. First, he eased a sandpaper strip from the magnet; alone, it gave him six extra centimeters. He nudged the strip into the gap, the clip shifted, yet remained beyond his grasp like a tiny island at low tide. If the strip reached even five more centimeters, he could hook the clip without adding anything else to the tool. Next, a waxy cloth rag was knotted on, which added eight more centimeters to the rod. The longer tool brushed the clip, raising it a finger's breadth before gravity slid it back with a tap. Dean paused, organized the pieces, then lashed rag and strip with thirty centimeters of waxed thread. The moment the new length slid under the cubby arch, the clip popped free and shot forward like a slow-motion rocket.
Kneeling, Dean turned the freed piece in his fingers; shallow dents dotted its surface like an archipelago across water. He had expected an ordinary clip, yet a tiny painted rocket near the hinge marked it as the shop's missing sample tag. The cobbler kept stitching, the awl tapping steadily, unaware that the tag now lay on the counter with its number visible. Dean hung the rag and strip back on their hooks, leaving a faint grey line where polish stains had rubbed off. He stood the metal tag upright beside the other clips, its edges catching the bulb's clear light.
