English 원문
Cracked rings of yesterday’s mud had littered the bucket station since Wyatt had scraped hard at the clay before breakfast. The middle bucket, thick with earth-heavy paste, had been filled the night before; now a dusty skin sealed the surface and gave off a dry, chalky whiff. An old harness strap, stiff and speckled with grit, dangled above the buckets, and a square of torn fleece lay nearby, smelling faintly of wet sheep. Cut grass released a sweet green scent around Inez, who knelt by the compost edge collecting dandelion heads for her own mixture. Confident that three solid mud bricks would soon stand on the drying shelf, Wyatt tapped his spoon against the crust and enjoyed the muffled, mineral thud.
The first push failed, and a blunt earthy aroma rose where the spoon bruised the skin. Without doubt, a dash of water would loosen the lid, so Wyatt shuffled to the hose. Iron-rich droplets touched the air with a metallic tang as the nozzle spun in his slippery grip; more than a dash poured before he could turn it back. A damp, musty breath rose when the crust surrendered and collapsed, sending pale slurry across the rim. Usable paste began to dwindle, its body thinning to the sour smell of watered clay while heavier lumps slid below. Each stir released more trapped air and stole more strength. The surplus he had counted on changed into excess liquid that seeped along the plank. Wyatt flexed grey-coated fingers, trimmed his aim to one wide brick instead of three, and planned a stony pattern so the cutback felt chosen, not forced.
He ladled the remaining firm mud into a small loaf tin, pressing grass fibres across the top to harness the pebbles in place. Inez set her petal broth nearby, its floral steam mixing with the damp mineral scent that hovered over the board. Together they eased their pans onto the tilted drying shelf, nudging them toward the centre where the wood lay flatter. Birdsong drifted above the hedge while the single brick darkened under slow, warm air.
