English 원문
Plink—water from the hose tapped the rim of a metal pan, then drummed into the shallow puddle below. In the shaded strip under the counter, Uma crouched by the thin-slurry bucket. She aimed to fill a fish-shaped mould waiting on the drying shelf, its raised scales etched like a tiny mackerel. A clear layer gleamed on the surface of the slurry, while dense paste hid beneath. She skimmed with a ladle, but the first swirl woke turbulence; mud and water rolled together, dark streaks chasing the brief lull between drips. She straightened, blinking at the sudden glare that bounced from the liquid. The mix slopped over her wrist and slid back; the spoon emerged almost empty, leaving the unwanted water still shining on top.
The glare had been strengthened by noon sun slipping through a gap in the hedge, so she shifted to block it with her shoulder. She tried a new angle: tilting the whole bucket toward the puddle so excess water could glide away in a thin sheet. The ground, slick with hose run-off, slid under her boot; the bucket thudded back, and the layers blended again. At that moment, Keane, busy lining pebbles along the work surface, swung the hose to rinse a sieve. The nozzle arced, and a fresh stream struck Uma’s bucket, washing a stray dollop of clay across the rim. A narrow shadow crossed her eyes; she exhaled sharply as the clear layer thickened instead of thinning. The second obstacle had arrived from a friend rather than the mud.
Uma waited until the hose spray dimmed; Keane moved toward the garden, leaving only a quiet drip. Using only her palms, she lifted the heavy bucket onto an upturned crate beyond the reach of reflected glare. Kneeling, she pressed her cheek near the rim so the interior lay in even shade. Gentle, steady scoops removed water until a smooth paste remained. At the bottom, a firm cake of yesterday’s mix slid free; light traced its outline and revealed an accidental sardine shape formed by cracked mud. She packed paste around it, filling the mould until the final ladle scraped dry against wood. The crate showed bare planks where not one drop of mud remained.
