English 원문
Morning light had already thinned when Gemma braced a foot on the silver-damp plank beside the hoisting rope. Her parent below sorted spare boards that lay in a loose pyramid against the trunk, each piece waiting its turn. She aimed to raise a narrow plank, fix it across two limbs, and turn the branch junction into a steady shelf. The bucket dangled halfway up; the coarse rope had swollen with dew, and stubborn friction refused to let it glide further. Gemma leaned back and pulled; the rope grated, but the bucket stalled and only the platform creaked in reply.
A colder gust bent the canopy, flipping pale leaves; the movement let the stuck rope slide a few centimeters. The release shot the bucket upward, it struck a side branch, and bark chips showered the platform like sharp rain. One chip skidded across a wet plank and nudged the open nail box toward a narrow gap over the ground. Several nail holes had been widened by last week’s gentle rain, making the plank even harder to anchor. If the rope had been smooth, the bucket would have risen cleanly, and none of this chain would have begun. Gemma lunged; her boot caught the sliding box just before it could vanish, yet the bucket now spun wildly against the trunk. A distant coyote bark echoed beyond the fence, masking the metallic thump for a heartbeat.
Balancing on the swaying boards, she noticed how the same coarse strands that had halted the lift now gripped the plank’s edge. The rope’s rough fibers pinched the wood against the bucket rim, acting as an instant clamp while the wind paused. Using that grip, she guided the plank into place, tapped two nails through grain, and the branch junction steadied beneath her knees. Above, the trunk briefly eclipsed the sun, drawing a grey band across the new shelf as if testing its line. With the plank now secure, the job’s proof lay in the moving rope itself. Gemma steadied the taut upper length, and her parent guided loose lower coils, the rope drifting sideways on a fresh breeze.
