Most shelves stood straight and clear, but one cooking aisle held a bulky metal cart wedged across it. Afternoon light pooled like honey on the carpet while Dante compared a curled call-number slip with the faded labels above. The book he wanted rested somewhere behind that cart, so he set both palms against the steel frame and pushed. Nothing moved; stacked hardbacks, a crate of sealed forks and spoons, and a plastic tub of children’s picture plates gave the cart surprising weight. Ruby arrived from the catalog terminal and tried to lift a corner, yet the wide wheels hardly shifted. Their breath warmed the still air, and the wall clock’s minute hand crept toward the coloured five-to-closing mark.
A soft announcement warned of the approaching lock-up, and staff began rolling empty return trays past the far study corner. The nearby step-stool was already being dragged away for reshelving, so Dante and Ruby crouched to scan the gap beneath the cart. High on the back shelf, a spine with a bright whisk icon showed itself—exactly the cookbook for their class project on kitchen sanitation and hygiene practices. Between the heavy cart and the raised shelf sat the problem. Then Dante noticed the cart design: a recent innovation added a broad, low footplate meant to protect volumes during transport. Its depth also offered a steady platform. He tapped the plate; it did not rock. Ruby steadied the handle while the sealed cutlery rattled lightly inside its crate, proof that nothing would tip. Dante placed a shoe on the cool lip, weight spreading across the thick metal. The cart stayed firm, and the distance to the shelf shortened to a single easy reach.
With Ruby’s fingers braced white around the side rail, Dante was reaching toward the faded spine, one boot balanced on the cart’s solid base.
