English 원문
Dust motes drifted away from a pale curve half-buried in the chalk bed, each grain flashing as a shaft of light crossed the pit. Holly crouched beside the curve, her knees brushing the string that framed square D2. She drew the flat-tipped trowel across the surface; the blade stopped at a sudden contact point where the chalk grew harder and the usual scritch rose a note higher. A thin shadow edged the obstacle, hinting at a ridge just beneath. Switching to the soft-bristle brush, she swept sideways so the bristles pushed a faint cloud into the glare. Jasper worked in the adjacent square, their elbows almost touching, yet the bright wall of chalk between them remained untouched. The researcher under the canopy stayed silent while the pit walls gleamed under noon light. Holly’s brush uncovered more of the arc, but the texture refused to explain itself, and every stroke only deepened the question glowing under white dust.
She climbed the wooden step for the spray bottle; on the rim her klutzy boot nudged an open storage container of fragments, sending bits rattling into the pooled darkness beneath the tool bench. Gathering them quickly, she misted the chalk surface. Water darkened the ridge unevenly, and a sunflower-like spiral flickered where plain stone had seemed to lie. If the mist dried too quickly, the pattern would disappear before a sketch could fix it. Tilting the lens toward the ridge, she caught a sharp glare; the spiral revealed smaller ridges running parallel, nothing like the single shell curve she first imagined. She swapped the brush for the dental pick and traced the outer rim, choosing to leave the deeper chalk untouched so the spiral stayed clear. A soft scritch echoed beside her. At the far edge of square D3, Jasper lowered his own brush onto a matching ridge that now glowed in the same bright band.
