English 원문
Two stubby chalk pieces lay on the slate edge, their sides streaked by repeated tracing strokes. Several ghost lines had been etched faintly across the surface, proof that the shadow never waited. Joelle lifted the shorter stick, hoping extra leverage might steady the tip against the crawling darkness. A gritty patch caught the chalk; the tip fractured, and the fresh line veered away from the hour groove. The crack startled a sparrow inside the hedge, and its wings shook loose a twig crawling with ants. Twig and insects thudded onto the slate, blotting the mark while the shadow slipped to a new, tangible edge.
She stepped back from the platform, a slight hunch lingering in her shoulders as she crossed the flagstones. At the wooden bench she flattened the notebook page, yet the wind curled its corner over an exhausted pencil stub. Numbers recorded, she turned the loose protractor hinge with both thumbs until the brass joint held firm again. She then walked to the fountain near the path, dipped her palms, and watched pale dust swirl away in the water. Behind the reference wall a garden volunteer dragged a hose, the rubber length squeaking against stone with every step. The volunteer glanced up, murmuring, "Quiet morning for numbers, isn’t it?", then returned to watering the beds. Joelle breathed in the mineral tang of damp slate and walked back toward the platform, notebook still open in her left hand. A stray ant rode the ripple outward, spinning like a tiny boat until the current carried it under a leaf.
Back at the platform, a breeze flicked her hat brim, rolling the broken chalk half against her wrist. She had left it near the gnomon earlier; now the piece slid beneath her waiting fingers without invitation. Water from the volunteer’s hose arced across the path, splashing the slate base and washing the ants toward grass. If she held the chalk close to its fracture, the short length would grant steadier leverage. She pressed lightly; the stick rasped once and laid a precise curve that clung to the shadow’s edge. One solid stub and a thumbnail chip slid deeper inside the basket groove as the wind drifted toward the hedge.
