“Does this wheel belong here?” Ruby spun the dented tin car on the cloth-covered pad, shoulders rolling forward to watch the uneven sway. The spare wheel between her thumb and forefinger kept an oval shape instead of a clean circle, so every turn tugged against the axle. She had smoothed the hole with a slim file before sliding the wheel halfway on, yet a thin band of play still remained. A folded cloth cradle, its stitches starting to unravel, steadied the body while a small clamp pressed from above. Muscles in her forearms tightened as she leaned toward the magnifying lamp; its warm beam traced the silver scrape around the dent. Beside her, Lily’s elbows rested wide while she dabbed paint on a wooden figure, brush bristles bending like grass under rain.

The ceiling bulb gave a sudden flicker, and an adult voice called from the doorway for help steadying a ladder. Ruby placed the car down and hurried across the room. When she returned, the clamp jaw had pinched deeper, locking the oval wheel at a slight angle and leaving a faint crescent gap under one rim. She lifted the car; her elbow bumped the lamp arm, which swung low and nudged a round hatbox perched near the parts box. The hatbox slid, tapped the divider tray, and a small gear tumbled out, rolling toward the painting corner. The gear clipped the base of Lily’s water cup, tilting it, but Lily sprang up, one hand gripping the cup, the other bracing the spinning gear before it reached the floor. The lamp arm slowed and hung still; the rolling gear dimmed to a wobble between her fingers, and Ruby steadied the tilted car against her palm. A thin trail of water trickled back into the cup, then paused.

Ruby balanced the car so its crooked front wheel turned lazily in open air, while Lily held the rescued gear, spinning it over her fingertip in loose, shiny loops.

天花板的燈泡突然閃爍，門口的大人喊她幫忙扶梯子。露比把車放下急忙過去。回來時，夾具已把橢圓輪子卡得更斜，輪緣下留下微小月牙縫。她抬起車時手肘撞到燈臂，燈臂一擺推到零件旁的圓帽盒。帽盒滑動撞向隔板盤，一顆小齒輪滾了出來，朝上色角落轉去。齒輪碰到莉莉水杯底座把杯子掀斜；莉莉立刻起身，一手抓住杯子，另一手撐住那仍在旋轉的齒輪，沒讓它落地。燈臂慢慢停下，齒輪在她指間也只剩輕輕搖晃，露比則把傾斜的玩具車穩在掌心。一細線水珠滑回杯中後停住。

露比舉高玩具車，讓那歪斜的前輪在空中慢慢轉動；莉莉則捧著救起的齒輪，讓它在指尖劃出鬆散而閃亮的小圓圈。
