Kira paused under the honey-colored lamp glow, linen apron straight, while Troy lowered a small oak wheel onto the slatted rack. Shelves rose around them like an art gallery of ochre rounds, each rind catching threads of warm light. Between their boots, a single linen cloth had been folded and left for the next wash; both noticed its neat square edges. Kira brushed a dried fleck of parsley from her sleeve— a souvenir of lunch finished quickly before the workshop. She then reached toward the cloth. Troy’s hand arrived at the same moment, fingers hovering. Neither spoke; condensation dripped with soft taps, filling the quiet. The heavy wheel still glimmered with surface moisture, and tending its sticky rind without that cloth looked a daunting task.

Both hands retreated, and Troy nudged the cloth toward Kira instead, then pointed at an empty jar standing under the slow spring. The jar’s rim caught amber light; a darker ring of brine showed it had spilt recently. Kira crouched, traced the damp footprint, and found the liquid thick with salt, not water from a shoe. The mark was no step at all—it was the splash where the jar had toppled, spread, and evaporated unevenly. She tilted the jar; another bead rolled over the edge. If the drip kept spreading, the wheel would grow a soft patch along its base. She had already turned the wheel once, but a second tilt would draw moisture away. Troy lifted the wheel’s far side while Kira tended the near rind with the precious cloth. The brine was being absorbed steadily, leaving both sides dry enough for the shelf. As Troy reached for the second cloth on a lower hook, a new droplet slid from the jar’s lip. He raised the fresh cloth, and beneath his elbow the stray bead crept toward an untouched wheel.
