He edged the swollen plank higher, aiming to push a larger percentage of the stream toward the little wheel. Cold water rushed past with a metallic tang, and the paddles resumed their slow revolution, flinging dusty spray that tasted like weak leaf tea. The wobbling stick marked the hinge point between sluggish and lively motion, yet much of the wheel’s force had been stolen by a hidden swirl, and the speed still lagged behind the mental blueprint taking shape in his head.

Sunlight baked the exposed board; minutes later its drying grain shrank, an almost invisible change that became a quiet catalyst. Water hissed louder, driving fresher, sour-cool flow onto the paddles. Leaves trapped upstream spun through the unseen vortex and slapped against the wheel, clogging three blades at once. A mallard splashed down, wings beating a musty cloud that mixed with the earthy smell of stirred silt. The startled bird knocked a spare board from its resting post; the plank drifted like a sweet crust toward the fork. Palmer dashed after it, boots sucking at the mud, and hooked the timber just before it slid into the irrigation side. The short chase kept him away from the sluice for only twenty breaths.

On return, spray from the wheel had cooled the board, swelling the grain again and rattling it tight in the groove. Flow toward the garden now roared, leaving the wheel nearly idle while a chalky smell rose from the drenched soil. Palmer dipped the bucket, poured cold water along the board’s top edge, and felt the fibers expand farther, pinching the gap until the stream divided more evenly. Spray brightened, the indicator stick flicked faster, and wet wood released a faint sweet note. One stubborn leaf still clung to the lowest paddle; Palmer held the rake above the channel, its blunt tines hovering as the blade kept turning beneath.
