English 원문
"The knob turns this way," Forrest said. Kane bent over the brass drum and watched the cable creep across its grooved rim while Forrest eased the iron knob that controlled the brake. Both boys stood on the mechanism floor, honey-coloured lamplight catching beads of oil on the flat steel plates under their boots. A lean black-and-white cat balanced on the gear housing, tail twitching at loose hemp ends that hung from a fraying safety cord. Forrest aimed to rewind the weight before the lens above slowed, and Kane wanted to pause the drum long enough to study a tiny hesitation he had noticed earlier. The single windlass handle jutting from the drum was the only tool for both jobs, and its wooden grip showed places where older keepers had begun to whittle away splinters.
Forrest had already heaved the handle halfway around when Kane stepped closer, palm raised toward the cat. If the handle jammed again, Kane would pause instantly. The cat leapt off, brushing Kane’s sleeve, and a loose thread snagged on a gear tooth. Kane snapped the thread away, pruning the cotton with his pocket knife, then pointed at the drum. The safety cord around the counterweight had been wrapped too loosely earlier, and strands now splayed beside the groove. A narrow ridge in the raised relief pattern of waves on the brass drum met the kink with each turn; whenever the two lined up, the lens above lurched. Forrest counted the beats aloud and slowed his pull, letting the ridge drift into clear view.
When the ridge appeared once more, Kane called, “Now,” and Forrest froze the handle. The weight hung motionless, giving Kane enough space to slide a flat cedar wedge—freshly whittled during lunchtime—between drum and frame. The wedge lifted the cable a finger’s breadth; the kink straightened, and the line ran true along the groove. Forrest shifted his grip and wound again, this time finding no hesitation. The cat perched on his shoulder, green eyes following the moving gears until they blurred into amber rings. A faint brass hum lingered in the stairwell.
