The plank beneath Pearl’s palm felt slick like polished glass, although its weathered surface looked ready to splinter. A chestnut-coloured pebble beside her spoon twitched, and six legs unfolded as a beetle stepped into the amber light. Between the plank and the garden hose, a thin puddle shivered, fed by steady droplets that fell with soft plops. The thick paste in the nearest bucket had formed a dusty crust overnight and refused the wooden spoon Pearl poked against it. That spoon had been stained by yesterday’s petal mash, a streak of faded pink running along its handle. When Pearl tapped the hard clay edge, a splatter jumped onto her sleeve, an embarrassment plain against the honey-brown fabric. The beetle paused before the puddle, antennae tracing the shining surface as bird calls flickered through warm garden air.

Pearl crouched and eased a thin twig from under a crate. She laid it so one tip kissed the near rim of water. The span fell short; the beetle still faced a shining gap wider than its body. She lifted a limp dandelion stem and slid it alongside, yet it floated crooked, twisting away in the slight ripple. The sequence of makeshift planks now reached two thirds across, but the plausibility of safe passage looked doubtful. If the leaf bridge tipped, the beetle would tumble into murky mud. Pearl jogged to the ingredient garden and snapped a firmer stick from the ground. She hurried back across the warm dirt path, loose grass seeds clinging to her canvas shoes. She tucked the sturdier twig under the others, and in that moment the small bridge tightened, holding its shape above the puddle.

The beetle tested the first twig, then marched across the narrow track without a slip. Its copper shell flashed like a tiny polished penny under the soft bright afternoon glow. Once on solid soil, it vanished beneath compost crumbs, and two more shining dots appeared near the cracked bucket. The earlier pebble had been the first in a chain; life had started to germinate under the warm plank. Meanwhile, at the drying shelf, Keira watched ants circle her mud tart and gently nudged a spare twig beside their path.
