The find felt more structural than artistic, yet someone joked it might become “an accidental piece of art.” Across the shed, the staple gun cracked, and the buzz of a handheld saw joined the layered chorus.

When Pearl returned for more tissue, a rolling cart nudged the basin across the floor until it stopped beside her boot with a gentle scrape. Without thinking, she slid both forearms under the rim, bent her knees, and lifted in one smooth motion; paste swayed but stayed inside. She carried it toward the float, matching her pace to the soft ringing that rose each time the basin brushed her elbow. At the supply table she lowered it, paste barely rippling. Only nine blue tissue sheets remained in the opened roll.
