Thud after thud, the stamp pad struck envelopes behind the counter while Ivy’s pen chain rattled against the metal edge of the form-filling desk. The clinking swing of that chain felt like a brisk kickoff, pushing her hand into a steady rhythm as she copied her grandmother’s address onto the blue form. Fluorescent tubes buzzed on a single high wavelength above, and their faint vibration crept through her shoulders. Halfway through the postcode the pen tugged back; the short chain yanked her wrist, jolting the desk. A stack of unused forms slid, brushed a bottle of correction fluid, and the rolling bottle tapped a cardboard mailing tube. The tube nudged a parcel drop-box flap, which clanged and startled a small terrier that waited beside its owner near the entrance.

The terrier’s ears lifted; it darted under the rope divider and its leash looped around Ivy’s ankle. She stepped back to free herself, leaving the half-written form on the desk. A bright beep burst from the overhead ticket display; the sound carried like a call to action but the queue barely shifted. Ivy crouched, unhooked the leash, and the dog trotted back to its owner, resuming whatever regimen of afternoon errands they followed. When Ivy returned, a thin line of correction fluid had crept across her form and dried into a brittle ridge. She peeled the page, and the ridge cracked, shortening one corner by a few millimetres. The trimmed edge no longer fit the template slot beside the digital scale.

She slid the damaged sheet under a fresh one, pressed harder, and let the pen glide in a wider arc that avoided the chain’s pull. The earlier tumble had pushed the mailing tube against the drop-box door, propping it shut. Ivy balanced the tube upright again; its weight pinned the correction fluid bottle, halting any further drift. As she shifted her parcel to the scale, its display blinked, showing stable weight at last. Near the doorway, the terrier sniffed the floor markings and then padded forward in a gentle zigzag toward the sunlit tiles.
