English 원문
Only two apples clung to each of the first four branches Zinnia passed, the empty stem-circles forming a neat, repeating row that told her how fast the supply was thinning. Torrential rain had softened the ground overnight, and the ladder’s feet sank when she tried to place it under the next tree, tilting the rungs into an awkward angle. Viola, working beside her, steadied the frame, yet the wood still rocked whenever Zinnia climbed the warm top step. She had been trying to conquer her fears of wobbly heights all morning, but the squishy earth kept undoing every effort. A shallow dip had been carved by other pickers’ boots, so each fresh attempt slid straight back into that rut. Meanwhile, their shared basket pressed heavier against Viola’s hip, the delicate balance inside threatened by every sway of unripe fruit against ripe ones.
Between awkward climbs the girls liked to parent new ideas, turning the chore into small experiments; today they agreed to embrace new experiences by using the soft earth itself. Zinnia pushed the ladder feet deeper with her heel until the wood met firmer clay below the soggy layer. The very softness that blocked her steps now locked the frame in place. With the ladder suddenly steady, she could lean farther into the canopy and tug a hidden limb toward the light. The two remaining apples were pale on the shaded side; a twist revealed a sun-touched blush, and she understood the pattern: earlier pickers had taken only the outward fruit they could see. She passed one apple down; Viola eased it into the “almost” section of their basket, then shifted the load so the bruised pears rested on top rather than beneath weighty newcomers. They repeated the anchored-ladder trick along the row, gathering just-right clusters without another trip to the sorting table. A thin film of cool juice lingered on Zinnia’s fingertips. Zinnia pressed the last apple into the basket liner.
