English 원문
Morning dew had already evaporated from the grass when Verity stepped into the pear row, and a robin burst from a branch. The slate streak along its back caught pale light before it dropped onto a higher twig above her head. Verity propped the three-rung ladder against the steel-grey trunk; the top rung held noon warmth while the lowest felt cool and damp. She climbed, fingers brushing lichen, and reached toward a pear glowing red where the sun had lingered. The stem resisted her careful twist, the whole limb springing upward so the fruit bobbed just beyond her fingertips. She let out a short breath, climbed down, and steadied the rocking ladder.
A wicker basket already half-full tugged at her arm, so she crossed the shadowed aisle toward the sorting table near the gate. Dappled stripes slid across the boards, and a small bump in the swollen planks sent one perfect pear rolling from ripe into almost. She nudged it back, then weighed two others on the hand scale before lowering them beside the first. Her grandparent, resting on a bench beyond the hedge, glanced over and murmured, "Clear day for picking." A nearby faucet dripped into a dented tin pail; she tilted the pail and drank, the cool water helping quench a dry throat. Beyond the leaves, the blue-grey outline of a mountain framed the orchard like a folded backdrop. On her slow return she paused to lift a windfall pear from the grass, turning it until hidden bruises gleamed under shifting leaf shadows. A wasp circled the fallen fruit, then drifted away.
As Verity walked back with an emptier basket, the ladder leaned where she had left it, yet the branch now drooped lower. The robin flitted down again, its slight weight bouncing the limb until the stubborn pear swung within easy reach. Without climbing, she slid a hand around the stem and gave a gentle, quicker twist; the fruit released with a soft snap. She stepped away from the tree, setting the pear on top of the others, and the robin hopped along the swaying twig.
