Charcoal Specks and the Hidden Crack-

English 원문
The trough water lay clear and still, but a dotted line of charcoal specks marched across the whetstone. Lily leaned closer, noticing each dot sat exactly one finger-width from the next, as regular as beads. Under the cool shade of the canvas awning, the pale board of the bench caught a silver-grey sheen, and faint mineral vapor drifted from the damp stone. An eco-friendly sailcloth, stitched from reused tarp, flapped above, sending lattice shadows over her hands. Bram, who had been lifting a pair of pruning shears from the pegboard, watched without comment while Lily slid the garden scissors forward; the blade hissed against the stone and left a fresh streak in the milky water. The speckled line stayed unmoved, almost inviting another look.
On her fourth stroke the edge jumped sideways, as if the stone had blinked. A shallow nick flashed along the blade, and the hiss dropped to a dull scrape. She wiped the surface with the corner of the cloth, yet the dotted track remained. Before she could inspect further, a sparrow dived onto the herb bed beyond the bucket; dried snail fragments burst upward, scattering shells across the path like tiny chalk chips. Their rattle startled Bram, who reached to steady the hanging tools, while Lily stepped away to scoop the ladle that had rolled toward the fence. During those few steps, the sun slipped past the awning edge; heat sipped moisture from the trough, and the slurry thickened until the stone turned almost sticky.
Lily returned and touched the stone; the dots now formed a faint ridge. One rub with the wire brush revealed a hairline crack running beneath them. Her earlier deduction—that the pattern was loose grit—collapsed, and a more insightful reason appeared: the specks had marked the hidden fault all along. Rather than scrub it smooth, she angled the scissors lower and used the viscous paste as a polishing film, letting the blade float with lighter pressure. The neighbor’s unused shears stopped creeping once Bram placed them farther from the vibration. A fresh paper strip fluttered beside the pine block as a breeze threaded through the awning seams. Lily was drawing the newly bright edge toward the whispering paper.
