English 원문
Salt-stiff rope scratched Hazel's palm as she edged past the loading zone under the rising light. Every coil lay in exact quarter-turn loops, lined like stepping rings toward the weighing station. The repeating spirals looked placed by a careful compass on the cold granite surface today. Above them, net curtains hung from wooden frames, each mesh square throwing caramel shadows on the granite. Drops gathered along the lowest struts and glimmered together like a tiny glass chandelier there. They swayed whenever a gust slipped between the boat hull and the quay edge below. Further out, the tide ruler showed the water falling by ten neat painted lines already. A narrow delta of grey silt already streaked the wall below the paint marks there. Hazel watched the slow drift of puddles across the stone under the amber morning light. She let her fingers trace the rope pattern again, counting loops without hurrying at her own pace.
Hollis called her from the weighing station and nudged a blue tub filled with crabs toward the hanging scale. Hazel gripped the cold rim, lifted, and hooked the tub onto the iron pan easily. Yet the wind shoved against the broad sides and the needle swung wide, refusing to settle. She stepped in front of the dial to block the draft with her steady stance. A new burst crept around her shoulders and set the tub rocking again at once. If she had let the bouncing continue, the dial's blunt honesty would have vanished behind a restless blur. The chandelier of droplets above the racks hung still between gusts, then tilted when the wind returned. Their pause offered a quiet signal of when the air lay calm above the scale.
During the next lull, the droplets stood motionless, and the rope coils on the ground no longer twitched against their bollards. Hazel lifted the tub once more; the pan eased downward, and the needle steadied at four kilos before the droplets leaned again. She memorised the number and shouted it toward Hollis, who scribbled on the chained clipboard. Satisfied, Hazel eased the tub onto a crate lid and began untangling a mooring line that had slipped below the stack. A gull on the nearest bollard flapped its wings twice, scattering a pale shell across the sun-streaked granite.
