A faint peppery scent rose from the celery, and the ribbed stalk resisted gently when Sam gave it a tiny squeeze. A parent rinsed another stalk at the sink, the knife moving on the board out of Sam's reach. Sam had planned to create a quartet of vivid stripes—blue, red, yellow, and green—so an empty glass waited beside the row. A thin plastic sleeve protected the spare stalk, ready to unwrap when the right dye appeared. The blue bottle still felt heavy, and the deep liquid caught sunlight like calm water in a jar.

Halfway through the notes, Sam tipped the blue bottle, and a single slow drop slid into the spoon. The supply had vanished more quickly than expected, leaving no blue for mixing a green glass. If the bottle emptied completely, the planned green stripe would remain imagination instead of joining the row. Before Sam could adapt, a furry companion—a grey cat—jumped onto the chair, its shoulder brushing the towel. The nudge rocked the row; pencils rattled, and the last drop of dye spread over the cloth like diluted ink.

A fallen carnation from the windowsill touched the wet patch, sending a pale pink thread towards the shadowed glass. In that moment, Sam recognised the new limit and slid the empty glass back to the supply shelf. The spare stalk stayed wrapped; instead, Sam recorded a final value beside the ruler—three columns of colour rather than four. The remaining dye had been absorbed by the celery, leaving faint stripes that rose another millimetre while sunlight moved across the table. Outside the window, a bus rattled past, yet inside the kitchen only water continued to drip from the tap.
