English 원문
Forty minutes of silent observation had haloed the blue glass with a golden ring. Pia lifted the magnifying glass above the celery’s cut end. The lens fogged slightly and slipped from her thumb. It struck a caramel-coloured pencil that had been left too near the rim of the notebook. The pencil rolled, nudged a plush paperweight shaped like two bear cubs, and the paperweight bumped the red glass. Water sloshed, ochre streaks spread across the towel, and the red stalk wobbled in surprise. Pia steadied the glass but her first close look was gone, the lens now lying face-down on the damp cloth.
She stepped away from the shaken glasses and crossed to the sink. Bram sliced a fresh stalk on a diagonal under the running tap. The stalk gleamed as she carried it toward the windowsill glass. She slid the cooler blue glass into a warmer stripe of light for balance. On the way back, she straightened the plush towel whose fibres had grown thin from daily affection with dripping plates. Next, she opened her notebook at the magnifying station and traced coloured bands onto the page. The pencil tones looked almost lost in translation beside the true dye spirals slowly climbing each stem. A mild draft swept through the kitchen, chilling the shadowed glass and rippling the surface a millimetre. Pia noted the shift, tapped the ruler against the margin twice, and turned toward the jug for another refill.
A sudden tremor from the jug’s heavy base jarred the table. The forgotten magnifying glass skated across the notebook and stopped against her wrist. Pia grasped it without pause, tipping the lens just enough to catch the celery’s lower centimetre. Through the clear circle she spotted a darker band where denser dye had pooled — a hidden flow finally exposed. The earlier spill, now thick in the towel’s weave, proved a blessing in disguise. Its damp ridge pressed against the red glass base and blocked any further sway. She wedged the plush cubs beside it for extra assurance, then marked the fresh stripe height. On the far counter, Bram turned a page of the recipe book, and flour dust drifted upward in slow spirals.
