Lemon dish soap burst against York's nostrils as warm suds slid from the shallow basin. A glossy green head bobbed between the foam peaks. For a breath he thought a tiny frog had slipped in from the grass. The sight drew him closer; he watched the shape dive into a pocket of bubbles, vanish, then rise again with small ripples. His fingers nudged a floating sponge aside, and thin rainbow films bent the light across his sleeves. The family pet — a wide-eyed terrier — circled under the bench. Its tail flicked stray droplets over York’s ankles, yet the dog showed no interest in the visitor. A breeze lifted the sweeter notes of soap toward the drying zone. Distant clinking plates provided background like casual storytelling at a fair. York leaned over the basin, curiosity outweighing the cool drips sliding from his elbows.

Work waited: the garden table beside the drip path still bore dusty rings from yesterday’s breakfast. York picked the swollen yellow sponge and pressed it onto the tabletop. Dedication tightened his shoulders, but each squeeze sent a rushing sheet that splashed wide, wasting water and darkening the ground. Half the basin already showed its bottom, and the trail had grown slippery. He switched tactics, choosing the smaller kitchen sponge, hoping its restrained trickle could entertain the task without flooding the floor. Mid-scrub, the ‘frog’ drifted nearer the bucket. Daylight struck it, revealing stitched eyes and a split seam. It was the terrier’s missing chew toy, swollen with suds and pretending to live. The rinse bucket, once clear, now swirled cloudy gray, and only a palm-deep pool remained. York lifted the toy onto the staging area. He set the soggy chew toy by the terrier’s paw, and the last clear drop slipped from his sponge onto the tabletop.

工作尚待完成：滴水路旁的花園桌仍留著昨日早餐的灰色杯底環。約克抓起膨脹的黃色海綿壓在桌面上。專注讓他肩膀繃緊，但每次擠壓都射出一片水幕，浪費了水量，也把地面染得更深。洗盆已有半盆見底，水跡變得滑膩。他改變策略，換成較小的廚房海綿，希望細水慢流不再淹地。擦拭半途，那隻「青蛙」漂向水桶，日光照到它，露出縫線的眼與裂開的縫口；原來是㹴犬遺失已久的咬咬玩具，被泡沫撐大，看起來像活物。原本清澈的沖洗桶此刻翻騰著灰白渾水，只剩掌心深的水位。約克把玩具放上置物區。他把濕漉漉的玩具擺到㹴犬腳邊，最後一滴清水從海綿滑落到乾淨的桌面上。
