The film stood as a first hurdle, so he pressed the sponge harder, sending a heavier sheet over the patch. Foam hissed and slid away, yet a faint stripe had been left behind each time the sponge passed. The bucket beside him had been filled with clear rinse water at the start, but a cloudy swirl now drifted near its rim, hinting that the solution was slipping.

He switched to the small dense sponge, a compromise that traded reach for control. Its ridged pad released a slow trickle, and a second stripe lightened, though not completely. A splash from his earlier squeeze arced farther than he expected and struck a sparrow perched on the fence. The bird jerked upward; beating wings brushed a dozing kitten at the staging area. Fur twitched, back paws scrambled, and the startled animal knocked a stack of dry sponges. One slid, glided across the wet table, and dropped into the rinse bucket. Sudsy water rose and spread a milkier cloud—an unwelcome amplification that turned a simple smear into a wider dilemma.

Drips pattered toward the floor, but Emil caught the bucket before it tipped, wedging it against the bench leg to halt the overflow. He noted a single stiff grey sponge still lying apart from the others, its distance suggesting loneliness among the tools. If the rinse water turns any darker, new stripes will form again, so a refill waits at the tap beyond the drip path. For now, he lifted the heavy yellow sponge from the basin and set it on the edge of the sink, droplets sliding down its squishy sides and racing toward the drain.
