English 원문
Only moments before, Lucia had flicked the taut string and listened to its clear ping travel across the clearing. Now she balanced on a sun-warm flat stone at station A, can pressed against her ear, waiting for York’s reply. The first syllables arrived clean, then dissolved into a nebulous rumble, as if the hedge swallowed the pitch halfway. She decided to lift the line higher, hoping the leaves would stop muffling the breathy notes. From the supply basket she took a straight twig and slid it under the cotton near the hedge top. The branch lifted the string, yet a faint creak warned that tension had slightly dropped. She fed a fresh length from the spool and wrapped it around the twig, adding weight for a fraction more height.
The extra cord hung in a loose loop, and a small gust rocked it against the twig. A tiny slip in the knot tightened suddenly, jerking the spool over inside the basket. The wooden cylinder tipped, rolled over the rim, and rattled across the grass toward her ankle. Its round edge butted the child-safe scissors, which glided like a short sled and clinked into the empty spare can. Metal rang through the clearing; the sudden collision twisted Lucia’s own can, letting the burr inside rotate away from its lucky angle. Across the gap York’s lips moved; only broken taps beat through the string toward her. He tapped the can once more, a gesture that seemed to inquire about the silence now sitting between them.
Lucia crouched beside the basket, feeling cool wind brush the slack line against her sleeve. Each added piece clearly stole more sound than it saved on the fragile wire. She loosened the cloth tape she had wound around the knot, peeled it free, and let the strip drop onto grass. Without the tape’s pull, the spare cord lifted, the loop shrank, and tension snapped back along the silver thread. The spool stopped beside her shoe; the scissors lay still, but the string buzzed again against the twig above. She turned her can a quarter-turn, letting the burr face outward toward the open field. At once a distant word slipped through the line—sharp, crisp, perfectly recognizable inside the hollow metal. Across the hedge, York shifted his weight on the crate, tilting forward to listen. The tightened thread trembled past the lowest branch and softly hummed toward Lucia’s waiting ear.
