The shadow seemed to gallop whenever either of them blinked; two minutes earlier it had brushed the twelve-o’clock groove, yet now it sliced the next mark. A breeze arrived like a soft overture, lifting dust that blurred old tracings. Several early arcs had been smudged by the wind, and the engraved hour lines had been filled with grey grit, turning smooth under probing fingers. Their pattern no longer formed a cogent curve. Ursa gripped the chalk but paused; if she had begun at once, Max would have lost his measurement again. A delighted laugh burst from Max as the ruler bumped the slate, and a puff of powder jumped into sunlight. The stumble gifted clarity: the arcs curved because the gnomon leaned east. They slid the protractor under the base, easing the post upright, then ran one final timed pass. Ursa lifted the slate displaying a cleaner arc while Max held his notebook of angles; the two pages fluttered differently in the breeze, proof that each now owned half of the corrected record.
